I bought a jar of toffees.
Four of us had them
Whenever we needed something sweet to munch
One day, I saw the empty jar
It found a place in the corner of the home
Where rubbish is kept.
Looking at the empty jar
An idea came to my mind
And I told it to my sister.
She smiled, and said “Yes! Let’s do it!”
She brought her colors and brushes
I brought my quilled papers
We took the jar from that corner
Washed its dust with water
The jar looked fresh and clean
My sister started painting
She made some floral designs,
Then painted some beautiful vines.
She added colors to some of the blank spaces,
And kept a bulk of them untouched.
“Why didn’t you color those places?” I asked.
“Let’s keep some places of the jar skin blank,
Because I have something in my mind.”
I smiled at her as I knew
the jar was going to look beautiful,
Either way, if colored full or half.
I wrapped the mouth of the jar with quilled papers,
And added a few little hearts at the bottom surface.
Then, we kept the renewed jar on the balcony
The colors needed time to be dried.
As evening came,
My sister brought the fairy lights from her bag.
She put the curled lights inside the jar
And lightened them up.
The glow of the jar spread in the room
To my sister’s face and mine
We looked at the jar of light in awe
And remembered where it was in the morning
And where it came to this evening
How a useless, empty jar
Glowed in the darkroom
Like a beacon of hope.
