An overwhelming disgust surrounds me

When I try to look within –

Hollow, dark, void –

There is nothing to praise

Nothing to take pride in

Nothing to appreciate my self-worth.

I thought of myself; was it me

Who kept reading and learning scriptures,

Spiritual books, wise words?

Where did their contribution go

When I still am nothing?

Then the realization bloomed in me

That they were my instruments for

The quest, the pursuit.

Until my introspection goes one level down and one step up,

The first letter in the process of ‘Introspection’

It would never allow me to release

The things I look for in me

When I am nothing but an idol of blood and flesh.

Once I release all things connected to the ‘I’,

The introspection begins

Taking me toward the path of illumination.

This is one of your best poems, methinks! So well presented, Swarnali. Reading good books is nothing if we don’t work on ourselves.

How profound and true Swarnali. And yeah, what good are the things we learn if we don’t use them to make our a better person, right?

Hollow, dark, void –There is nothing to praise-Nothing to take pride in-Nothing to appreciate my self-worth- What powerful words, Swarnali. This is so raw and honest. I wish you knew how worthy you are and surging ahead, facing life head on.

Thank you, Harjeet. Your words are always encouraging. Means a lot. This poem is written in a spiritual perspective, though.

How true! I can totally relate to this state of feelings. The journey to self worth is quite an arduous one, and often we have to walk through the dark, meandering road to nowhere before we see light.

Enjoying reading the poems here, Swarnali.

After all we are humans. Many of us, would turn heywire, if we introspect us.

When I am nothing but an idol of blood and flesh.

    Exactly!!!

    Where did their contribution go

The regret echoing in this line is painful.

    The introspection begins

Taking me toward the path of illumination.

Yes, let’s do a post-mortem on our own thoughts and actions—at the very least, it moves us a step closer to illumination.

    Well done. All the best.

How deep and powerful! The scriptures help us in the journey and we need to shed ‘I’ for the journey to begin. It amazes me how you express such profound truths in just few words. Quite impactful, I must say!!!
