I have been seeking ‘Enlightenment’

Ever since my birth.

But the spiritual path

That I have embarked

On, is different than what I imagined once.

The Enlightenment is not my ultimate reward

I don’t seek Nirvana, the illumination of wisdom

Where I will attain Moksha all alone.

I seek the Nirvana that offers light to everyone

Mukti –

the liberation of souls – of hundreds, thousands, millions.

I am enlightened

When I surrender myself to the art of compassion

I am enlightened

When I devote myself to the service of mankind

I am enlightened

When I unlock the door of the cage

And let the shackled bird fly to attain salvation.

A spiritual poem on Enlightenment

Beautiful, Swarnali. The metaphor of that cage is something we can all resonate with

Beautiful words strung together to make a garland of enlightenment, Swarnali. Attaining Moksh is for one’s self but serving humanity is Nirvana for sure.

What beautiful poetry! I was truly amazed when you spoke about collective enlightenment rather than just personal one. During my tours, I often talk about Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and Bodhisattva Guanyin—the embodiments of ultimate compassion in Indian and Chinese Buddhism, respectively. What you ask and what they both taught are very similar: they seek to help everyone achieve enlightenment before they do . When you mentioned collective enlightenment, you were also speaking about the art of compassion, (I still wonder if compassion is an art and the reason for your usage) which perfectly aligns with the teachings of the bodhisattvas. I had just discussed this with my guests on Sunday, and now I’m reading your poem—I feel so happy!
    Wonderful. All the best.

Actually, I wrote the poems without thinking much, I just let myself flow with the flow and write whatever came to my mind after seeing the word. Thus, they’re my interpretation of the words. I am spiritually initiated in the RKM order, and Swami Vivekananda taught us how we should think about offering enlightenment to others as well. I thought about it and wrote this poem.
